Understanding the Georgia Promise Scholarship:

What Families Need to Know for 2026–2027

Georgia families seeking more flexibility in their child’s education have a powerful new option: the Georgia Promise Scholarship Program. Established in 2024 through Senate Bill 233, the program is designed to help families pursue exceptional educational opportunities outside the traditional public school system, including private schools, accredited home‑study programs, and approved service providers.

For many households, this scholarship represents not just financial support however the freedom to choose an educational environment which best fits their child’s needs, learning style, and long‑term goals.

🌟 What the Georgia Promise Scholarship Offers

Eligible families who opt into the program can use scholarship funds for a wide range of educational expenses, including:

  • Private school tuition and fees
  • Required textbooks and curriculum
  • Tutoring services
  • Physician or therapist services related to education
  • Transportation services
  • Other approved educational expenses

The scholarship amount for 2026–2027 will be announced once state funding formulas are finalized. For reference, the 2025–2026 award provided up to $6,500 per student, distributed quarterly.

📅 Critical Application Deadlines for the 2026–2027 School Year

Families must pay close attention to the application windows, as these dates determine eligibility for the upcoming academic year.

Student Application Windows

For the 2026–2027 academic year, the Georgia Promise Scholarship will accept applications during two periods:

  • March 1 – March 31, 2026
  • May 1 – May 31, 2026

The May 2026 window is the final opportunity to apply or recertify for the Fall 2026 semester.

Important Note for Higher‑Income Households

For families above 400% of the Federal Poverty Level, the May 2026 window is also the last chance to be considered for both Fall 2026 and Spring 2027.

🧭 Who Is Eligible?

A student may qualify if they:

  • Are currently enrolled in a Georgia public school for two consecutive semesters, or
  • Are a rising kindergartener entering school for the first time.

Additional eligibility details, including residency requirements, age limits, and interactions with other scholarship programs, are available in the program’s Family FAQs.

🔄 Understanding “Opting In.”

“Opting in” means a family confirms their intention to use Georgia Promise Scholarship funds and will withdraw their student from public school after the current semester ends.

To remain eligible:

  • Students must stay enrolled in public school through the end of the semester in which they apply.
  • Withdrawal must occur after the semester ends and before the semester in which scholarship funds will be used.

Examples:

  • A student applying in March must stay enrolled through June and may withdraw before the new school year.
  • A student applying in September must stay enrolled through December and may withdraw before the spring semester.

📝 How to Apply

Families will apply through the Georgia Promise Scholarship online portal. The site provides:

  • A pre‑screen tool
  • Required documentation checklists
  • Application training videos
  • A Family Handbook (English & Spanish)

These resources help ensure families understand the process and submit complete, accurate applications.

Once applications are reviewed:

  • Families will be notified if they have been awarded funds.
  • Accounts are funded quarterly, and parents initiate payments to participating private schools or approved providers.
  • Any unused funds remain in the student’s account for future eligible expenses.
