Get ready to be wowed, inspired, and maybe even a little bug-obsessed! Fernbank Museum is welcoming a spectacular new exhibit this fall that’s perfect for curious kids, nature-loving families, and anyone who has ever stopped to admire a butterfly or beetle. From August 9th to November 2nd, 2025, step into the fascinating world of insects with Extinct and Endangered: Insects in Peril, a jaw-dropping photography experience that’s as educational as it is eye-popping.
📸 What’s the Buzz About?
This is not your average bug exhibit. It is a visual adventure told through massive, high-definition macrophotographs by world-renowned photographer Levon Biss. Each image, some as big as 6 feet wide, is made from up to 10,000 individual photos stitched together to reveal the tiniest, most intricate details of 19 endangered or extinct insect species. Think shimmering wings, fuzzy antennae, and dazzling colors you have never seen before!
You will meet rare and remarkable insects like the Blue Calamintha Bee, the Elderberry Longhorn Beetle, and the Louisiana Eyed-Silkmoth. These creatures may be small, but their impact on our planet is mighty, from pollinating plants to breaking down waste and keeping ecosystems in balance.
🌍 Why It Matters
Insects are essential to life on Earth, but many species are disappearing due to habitat loss, climate change, and pesticides. This exhibit helps families understand the challenges insects face and why protecting them matters not just for science, however for our gardens, food, and future.
Kids will love seeing the rediscovered Lord Howe Island Stick Insect and the vibrant Katydid, while grown-ups will appreciate the powerful message behind the art. It is a perfect blend of science, storytelling, and stunning visuals.
🌙 Bonus Fun: After-Hours Events!
Want to experience the exhibit in a whole new light? Fernbank will host special after-hours events where families can explore the exhibit with added activities and excitement. Keep an eye out for dates!
